Lateral Pass - Alternate Uses

Alternate Uses

The oxymoron "forward lateral" is used to describe an attempted "lateral" (backward pass) that actually goes forward. In most cases, it is illegal.

A variant, the hook and lateral, where a forward pass is immediately passed backward to a second receiver to fool the defense, is used on occasion.

Famous quotes containing the word alternate:

    I alternate treading water
    and deadman’s float.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

It might become a wheel spoked red and white
In alternate stripes converging at a point
Of flame on the line, with a second wheel below,
Just rising, accompanying, arranged to cross,
    Through weltering illuminations, humps
Of billows, downward, toward the drift-fire shore.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)
