At Rest Pressure
At rest lateral earth pressure, represented as K0, is the in situ lateral pressure. It can be measured directly by a dilatometer test (DMT) or a borehole pressuremeter test (PMT). As these are rather expensive tests, empirical relations have been created in order to predict at rest pressure with less involved soil testing, and relate to the angle of shearing resistance. Two of the more commonly used are presented below.
Jaky (1948) for normally consolidated soils:
Mayne & Kulhawy (1982) for overconsolidated soils:
The latter requires the OCR profile with depth to be determined.
To estimate K0 due to compaction pressures, refer Ingold (1979)

Famous quotes containing the words rest and/or pressure:
“We must remember the past, define the future, and challenge the presentwherever and however we can. It will take the rest of our lives even to begin. But then, what else have we to do?”
—Jane OReilly, U.S. feminist and humorist. The Girl I Left Behind, Introduction (1980)
“By school age, many boys experience pressure to reveal inner feelings as humiliating. They think their mothers are saying to them, You must be hiding something shameful. And shucking clams is a snap compared to prying secrets out of a boy whos decided to clam up.”
—Ron Taffel (20th century)
