On January 11, 2009, 23 ancient Olmec sculptures were vandalized by evangelical activists, at least one of whom is a U.S. citizen. The Christians claimed to have "a mandate from God" to destroy "these works of the devil." Damaging archeological sites in Mexico is a criminal offense- prompting Mexican legislators to draft legislation "that would increase fines and jail time for vandalism and looting of monuments and archaeological sites."
