La Mer (Debussy) - Influence, Quotation and Sampling

Influence, Quotation and Sampling

Generally speaking, La mer has been influential to many contemporary soundtrack composers because of its highly suggestive and moody atmosphere.

  • Luciano Berio quotes the 2nd movement, "Jeux de vagues", in the third movement of his Sinfonia, premiered in 1968.
  • Some passages (the 3rd movement, for example) of La mer may have inspired John Williams for the score he wrote for Jaws (1975).
  • In 1991, the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, who referred to Debussy as being his "first teacher", based a work, Quotation of Dream: Say Sea, Take Me! on a theme from La mer.
  • In 2002, Norwegian composer Geir Jenssen (alias Biosphere) loosely based his ambient album Shenzhou around looped samples of La mer .

Famous quotes containing the word quotation:

We are as much informed of a writer’s genius by what he selects as by what he originates. We read the quotation with his eyes, and find a new and fervent sense; as a passage from one of the poets, well recited, borrows new interest from the rendering. As the journals say, “the italics are ours.”
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
