Kwai Chung Incineration Plant - Cessation of Operation

Cessation of Operation

In 1989, the Hong Kong Government issued a White Paper, Pollution in Hong Kong - A Time to Act. After considering the effects of air pollution on the environment and public health, it decided to cease using incineration to dispose of solid waste. This decision was later suspended and, as of 2008, the Hong Kong Government is considering constructing new incinerators.

In May 1997, Kwai Chung Incineration Plant ceased to operate, the last of Hong Kong's four plants.:

  • Lai Chi Kok Incinerator Plant - commissioned 1969 and decommissioned 1991; now part of the expanded container port area
  • Kennedy Town Incineration Plant - commissioned 1967 and located next to Island West Transfer Station; decommissioned 1993 and now berthing facility
  • Mui Wo Incineration Plant - commissioned 1987 and decommissioned 1994; now site of Silvermine Bay Outdoor Recreation Camp

Famous quotes containing the words cessation of, cessation and/or operation:

... we, like so many others who think more of working than of dying, care only to push on steadily, wishing less for cessation of toil than for strength to keep at it; and for wisdom to make it worthy of the ideal of labor and of life which we believe to be the most precious gift of Heaven to any soul.
    Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844–1911)

Human knowledge and human power meet in one; for where the cause is not known the effect cannot be produced. Nature to be commanded must be obeyed; and that which in contemplation is as the cause is in operation as the rule.
    Francis Bacon (1560–1626)
