KRL Jabotabek - Transition and Expansion

Transition and Expansion

In July 2011, all trains began stopping at every station along each route, discontinuing express route service. On December 5, 2011 trains began operating in a new 'loop-line' system, in which the number of routes was reduced from 37 to six, each route connecting suburbs with downtown Jakarta. Passengers bound for downtown are required to transfer onto the Bogor-Jatinegara loop-line at Manggarai and Jatinegara train stations in East Jakarta, Tanah Abang station in Central Jakarta, Duri station in West Jakarta or Kampung Bandan station in North Jakarta. Previously, KRL operated on a point-to-point system in which passengers could ride downtown without changing trains.

The new system is said to increase ridership capacity by 10 percent, as the number of trains increases from 467 to 531 per day. By 2014, PT KAI Commuter Jabotabek is predicted to carry 1.2 million passengers by electric train with a total of 1,440 cars. As of May 2011, the system owned 386 cars, only 326 of which were in operational condition.

Famous quotes containing the words transition and/or expansion:

A transition from an author’s books to his conversation, is too often like an entrance into a large city, after a distant prospect. Remotely, we see nothing but spires of temples, and turrets of palaces, and imagine it the residence of splendor, grandeur, and magnificence; but, when we have passed the gates, we find it perplexed with narrow passages, disgraced with despicable cottages, embarrassed with obstructions, and clouded with smoke.
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)

We are caught up Mr. Perry on a great wave whether we will or no, a great wave of expansion and progress. All these mechanical inventions—telephones, electricity, steel bridges, horseless vehicles—they are all leading somewhere. It’s up to us to be on the inside in the forefront of progress.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)
