History
The airport was built during the 1940s for military usage. In 1961 it started to be used for civilian aviation. Stockholm has always been the largest destination by number of passengers. Also some international destinations have been flown, like Copenhagen (before the Ă–resund Bridge), London, Ljubljana, Kaunas and Palanga. The airport was state owned until 2004, but is now owned by the city and county.
Since Skyways, the only airline operating regular passenger traffic to the airport, went bankrupt on May 22 2012, there have been no regular passenger flights. As of May 29 2012, discussions are being held with several airlines to reinstate traffic.
