Kremasta (lake)

Lake Kremasta (Greek: Λίμνη Κρεμαστών Limni Kremaston) is the largest artificial lake in Greece. The construction of the dam of Kremasta was completed in 1969 concentrating waters from four rivers: Acheloos, Agrafiotis, Tavropos and Trikeriotis. The water that is accumulated in the artificial lake is about 4,700,000,000 cubic metres (3,800,000 acre·ft). It prevents flooding of the Acheloos, and supplies electricity to the national grid during peaks of demand. The power station at the dam is the biggest Hydroelectric plant in Greece, (Rated Power: 437.2 MW). It was constructed in 1966 and is owned by the Public Power Corporation (DEH A.E.). At the time of its construction, it was the largest earth-filled hydroelectric project in Europe.

The lake is located on the borders of Aetolia-Acarnania and Evrytania. Two bridges over the lake (Tatarna and Episkopi) connect Valtos and Evrytania. The water of the lake penetrates along the beds of the rivers mentioned above, and forms a lot of fiords and small islands. The municipalities with shores on the lake are Parakampylia and Inachos in Aitoloakarnania, and Aperantia, Fragkista, Viniani, Karpenisi, and Proussos in Evrytania.

The GR-38 passes through the bridge of Tatarna over the lake of Kremasta and is in the last stage of its construction.
