Korean Drama - Time Slots

Time Slots

Time slots often define the nature of a drama in Korea. 10 to 11 PM slots are reserved for the prime-time flagship shows. Dramas are aired at 10PM for two consecutive days; this results in three prime-time drama slots: Monday-Tuesday, Wednesday-Thursday and weekend. All three commercial terrestrial networks (KBS, MBC, SBS) follow this format.

Prime-time shows typically consists of 12 to 30 episodes, though a historical drama or a show in the 10PM weekend slot may be considerably longer at around 50 episodes. The number of episodes is often fluid and a show is often extended if it gains popularity.

Soap operas dominate morning slots (around 9AM, though exact time depends on network) and 7 or 8PM evening slots. Dramas in these slots are in telenovella format, rarely running over 200 episodes. Shows either run on weekdays or weekends. Contrary to its American counterpart, soap operas never run at daytime (prime-time reruns are often shown). Soap operas often take the crown in terms of viewership. For example, evening soap Temptation of a Wife's ratings peaked at 40.6% according to TNS Korea.

Famous quotes containing the word time:

I cannot exaggerate the waste of the President’s time and the consumption of his nervous vitality involved in listening to congressmen’s intercession as to local appointments. Why should the President have to have his time taken up in a discussion over ... who shall be the postmistress of Devil’s Lake, in North Dakota? How should he be able to know ... who is best fitted to fill such a place?
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
