Present Status
The foundry is currently owned by the City of Sutter Creek. The city and the non-profit Knight Foundry Corporation closed escrow on June 30, 2009, with restoration and hazardous material clean up scheduled to complete in early 2010. In addition to the historic interpretive tour and showcase, the business plan calls for an applied science exhibit and a skills preservation workshop series. The business plan also calls for the limited operation of the foundry to assist with other historic projects throughout the region in order to replace historic iron machine parts, lamp posts, ornamental architectural trim pieces and other historic iron fixtures.
The foundry is registered as a California Historical Landmark. and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also designated a Mechanical Engineering Historic Site by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and has been declared one of America's Most Endangered Places by the Smithsonian Institution.

Famous quotes containing the words present and/or status:
“All questions rely on the present for their solution. Time measures nothing but itself. The word that is written may be postponed, but not that on the lip. If this is what the occasion says, let the occasion say it.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Anthropologists have found that around the world whatever is considered mens work is almost universally given higher status than womens work. If in one culture it is men who build houses and women who make baskets, then that culture will see house-building as more important. In another culture, perhaps right next door, the reverse may be true, and basket- weaving will have higher social status than house-building.”
—Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen. Excerpted from, Gender Grace: Love, Work, and Parenting in a Changing World (1990)
