Language and Dialect
The original local dialect is of Dutch origin- whereas the official language is German which is dominant among the younger generation. Because of its geographical location directly at the Dutch-German border, a strong overlap in culture and language can be observed. This is for example manifested in the person of Govert Flinck although born in Kleve established himself as a Dutch artist.

Famous quotes containing the words language and/or dialect:
“This is of the loonI do not mean its laugh, but its looning,is a long-drawn call, as it were, sometimes singularly human to my ear,hoo-hoo-ooooo, like the hallooing of a man on a very high key, having thrown his voice into his head. I have heard a sound exactly like it when breathing heavily through my own nostrils, half awake at ten at night, suggesting my affinity to the loon; as if its language were but a dialect of my own, after all.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The eyes of men converse as much as their tongues, with the advantage that the ocular dialect needs no dictionary, but is understood all the world over.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
