Kiryat Motzkin Railway Station - History

History

The present-day station stands on the spot of a halt that existed as early as 1937 on the Beirut–Cairo railway, constructed by the British during their Mandate for Palestine. This halt was Kiryat Motzkin's only means of transport to and from the surrounding areas, especially the city of Haifa.

The station was reconstructed in the early 1990s according to the present passenger station format of Israel Railways. In the late 1990s a tunnel was constructed just north of the station, replacing the dangerous level crossing that existed in its place.

During the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict train service to the station was suspended after a Hezbollah Katyusha rocket hit a train depot in Haifa on July 16, 2006, killing eight Israel Railways workers. It was restored 29 days later, on August 14, two days after the ceasefire went into effect.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Social history might be defined negatively as the history of a people with the politics left out.
    —G.M. (George Macaulay)

He wrote in prison, not a History of the World, like Raleigh, but an American book which I think will live longer than that. I do not know of such words, uttered under such circumstances, and so copiously withal, in Roman or English or any history.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Revolutions are the periods of history when individuals count most.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
