Kingsmill Massacre

The Kingsmill massacre took place on 5 January 1976 near the village of Kingsmill in south County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Eleven Protestant men were taken from a minibus, ten of whom were shot dead by a group calling itself the South Armagh Republican Action Force. One man survived, despite having been shot 18 times. The group claimed that the attack was in revenge for the killing of six Catholics the night before.

A Historical Enquiries Team investigation into the incident found that members of the Provisional IRA had carried out the attack despite the organisation being on ceasefire. It also found that the victims were targeted simply because of their religion. The report said that the attack had been planned some time in advance and the weapons used in another 110 murders or attempted murders.
