Famous quotes containing the words candidate, united, states and/or election:

    Hear, then, a mortal Muse thy praise rehearse,
    In no ignoble verse;
    But such as thy own voice did practise here,
    When thy first-fruits of Poesy were given,
    To make thyself a welcome inmate there;
    While yet a young probationer,
    And candidate of Heaven.
    John Dryden (1631–1700)

    Why doesn’t the United States take over the monarchy and unite with England? England does have important assets. Naturally the longer you wait, the more they will dwindle. At least you could use it for a summer resort instead of Maine.
    —W.H. (Wystan Hugh)

    The city of Washington is in some respects self-contained, and it is easy there to forget what the rest of the United States is thinking about. I count it a fortunate circumstance that almost all the windows of the White House and its offices open upon unoccupied spaces that stretch to the banks of the Potomac ... and that as I sit there I can constantly forget Washington and remember the United States.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)

    Savages cling to a local god of one tribe or town. The broad ethics of Jesus were quickly narrowed to village theologies, which preach an election or favoritism.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
