Kigezi District - People

People

The four modern district of the former Kigezi District are inhabited predominantly by the Bakiga, Bahororo and Banyarwanda people. All these ethnic groups share the same characteristics and traditions. The people of this region are known as some of the more serious and hardworking ethnic groups of Uganda. All these attributes distinguish the region of Kigezi from other parts of the country. Paul Ngologoza’s book Kigezi and Its People provides detailed information about the Bakiga people, their traditions and history.

The region is uniquely characterized by the African Great Lakes, which include Lake Bunyonyi, Lake Edward, Lake Mutanda and Lake Kyahafi. Kigezi is also the location of the volcanic mountains known as Muhavura Mountains, and Bwindi National Forest with its famous gorilla population. There are very high mountain ranges, particularly in Kabale District, Kisoro District and Kanungu District. In the intervening valleys, often one finds expansive swampy areas, some of which, particularly those in Kabale District, have been reclaimed for pastureland.

Famous quotes containing the word people:

Some people swallow the universe like a pill; they travel on through the world, like smiling images pushed from behind.
    Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894)

...I knew I wanted to be permanently self-supporting and I vaguely thought I might work somewhere in the realm of ideas. I felt that I had within me an undeveloped fount of ideas. I did not know exactly what my ideas were, but whatever they were I wanted to convert people to them.
    Rheta Childe Dorr (1866–1948)

The inference is, that God has restated the superiority of the West. God always does like that when a thousand white people surround one dark one. Dark people are always “bad” when they do not admit the Divine Plan like that. A certain Javanese man who sticks up for Indonesian Independence is very lowdown by the papers, and suspected of being a Japanese puppet.
    Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960)
