Khirbet Beit Lei - Hebrew Inscriptions

Hebrew Inscriptions

Seven inscriptions in Biblical Hebrew remained in various states of preservation, and there is some disagreement about how they should be read. It appears that the words YHWH (Yahweh) and YRSHLM (Jerusalem) feature in the inscriptions, which Naveh dated to the late 6th century BCE.

יהוה אלהי כל הארץ, הרי יהד לו לאלהי ירשלם, המוריה אתה חננת נוה יה יהוה

The reference to Jerusalem is the oldest Hebrew language mention using this spelling.

Famous quotes containing the words hebrew and/or inscriptions:

we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
    —Bible: Hebrew Psalm C (l. C, 3)

“Our earth is degenerate in these latter days. Bribery and corruption are common. Children no longer obey their parents. . . . The end of the world is evidently approaching.” Sound familiar? It is, in fact, the lament of a scribe in one of the earliest inscriptions to be unearthed in Mesopotamia, where Western civilization was born.
    C. John Sommerville (20th century)
