The Khasic or Khasian languages are a family of Austro-Asiatic languages spoken in the northeast-Indian state of Meghalaya and neighbouring areas of Bangladesh. They consist of:
- Khasi
- Pnar: closest to Proto-Khasi
- War: southern dialect displaying no vowel length contrast, as well as vowel restructuring
- Amwi
- Bhoi
- Lyngngam: Speakers were former Garo speakers who had adopted Khasi.
Paul Sidwell (2011) suggests that Khasian is closely related to Palaungic, forming a Khasi-Palaung branch.
Famous quotes containing the word languages:
“The very natural tendency to use terms derived from traditional grammar like verb, noun, adjective, passive voice, in describing languages outside of Indo-European is fraught with grave possibilities of misunderstanding.”
—Benjamin Lee Whorf (18971934)
