Keyano College - History

History

Keyano College opened in Fort McMurray in 1965 as the Alberta Vocational Centre (AVC). The official opening ceremonies were held on January 26, 1966. In 1975 the College was reopened under its current name, "Keyano", which is a Cree word which loosely means "sharing". The original slogan for the College was "Yours, Mine and Ours" which closely represents and honours the original Cree meaning of the word, "Keyano".

When the province of Alberta appointed a Board of Governors to serve as the decision-making body for the institution, the school officially became a public, community college.

Keyano College has expanded to include a family housing complex, student residence, Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre (SSWC), three campuses, and satellite locations which provide education to many northern communities.

Look through the whole history of countries professing the Romish religion, and you will uniformly find the leaven of this besetting and accursed principle of action—that the end will sanction any means.
    Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834)

My good friends, this is the second time in our history that there has come back from Germany to Downing Street peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And now I recommend you to go home and sleep quietly in your beds.
    Neville Chamberlain (1869–1940)
