Died From Cancer After Three Years

McNamara's reign in Dublin was short-lived. Already suffering from what proved to be terminal cancer (giving him the onerous responsibility for Ireland's biggest diocese when he was known to be in poor health was criticised within the Church), Archbishop McNamara died in April 1987, only months after the Fine Gael minority government had been defeated in the 1987 general election.

Archbishop McNamara was succeeded as archbishop by a university lecturer, Desmond Connell.

Famous quotes containing the words died, cancer and/or years:

There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham.
    Bible: New Testament, Luke 16:19-22.

We “need” cancer because, by the very fact of its incurability, it makes all other diseases, however virulent, not cancer.
Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. “Under the Sign of Cancer,” Myths and Memories (1986)

Neither years nor books have yet availed to extirpate a prejudice then rooted in me, that a scholar is the favorite of Heaven and earth, the excellency of his country, the happiest of men. His duties lead him directly into the holy ground where other men’s aspirations only point. His successes are occasions of the purest joy to all men. Eyes is he to the blind; feet is he to the lame. His failures, if he is worthy, are inlets to higher advantages.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
