Kevin Matthews (radio Personality)

Kevin Menear (born March 12, 1956), known professionally as Kevin Matthews, is a Midwest United States radio personality, best known for his 12-year association with WLUP-FM "The Loop" and its one-time sister-station, WMVP AM1000. Matthews became popular for his off-kilter take on various topics. He's known for doing voices, including that of his irascible sidekick, sportscaster Jim Shorts. Many listeners in the early days never caught on to the fact that Shorts was a character. One of his famous bits was encouraging his listeners to yell out "Free Bird!" at various concerts, whether it was the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, or Barry Manilow. One infamous incidence of this was a heckler shouting Free Bird as well as the names of Matthews and Shorts at a Bill Hicks show, prompting the well-known "Hitler had the right idea" rant.

Matthews announced on December 8, 2008 that he has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Famous quotes containing the words kevin and/or matthews:

Well, on the official record you’re my son. But on this post you’re just another trooper. You heard me tell the recruits what I need from them. Twice that I will expect from you.... You’ve chosen my way of life. I hope you have the guts enough to endure it. But put outa your mind any romantic ideas that it’s a way to glory. It’s a life of suffering and of hardship and uncompromising devotion to your oath and your duty.
—James Kevin McGuinness, and John Ford. Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke (John Wayne)

I was supposed to retire when I was seventy-two years old, but I was seventy-seven when I retired. On my seventy-sixth birthday a lady had triplets. It was quite a birthday present.
    —Josephine Riley Matthews (b. 1897)
