T.M Jacob rose to prominence as a student leader, growing through the ranks of Kerala Students Congress, the students wing of the then United Kerala Congress. His leadership skills helped him to become the youngest MLA in the state of Kerala at the age of 26. In 1982 at the age of 32, he became the Education Minister of the state. In his political career spanning 34 years, he has held ministerial portfolios like Education, Culture, Irrigation & Water, Food & Civil Supples etc.
