Keladi Chennamma

Keladi Chennamma was the Queen of Keladi Kingdom in Karnataka, daughter of Siddappa Setti of Kundapur. Keladi Kingdom, also called Bednur and Ikkeri at differrent times, was formed after the fall of Vijayanagar Kingdom. Chennamma married King Somashekara Nayaka in 1667 CE. After Somashekhara Nayaka's death (1677), she became the queen of Keladi Nayaka dynasty, administered effeciently, fought the Mughal Army of Aurangzeb from her base in the kingdom of Keladi in the Sagara, Karnataka India and ruled the state for 12 years. She adopted Basavappa Nayaka, who was one of her close relatives and succeeded as Hiriya Basappa Nayaka. She entered an angrement with Portuguese in connection with the trade of pepper and rice. She also permitted Portuguese to construct Churches at Mirjan, Honavar, Chandavar and Kalyanpur.
