Private Practice
Since 1996 Ablow has had a private practice of forensic, adult and adolescent psychiatry with offices in Newburyport, Massachusetts and New York City. Ablow has testified in numerous high-profile cases, including those of Dr. Richard Sharpe, Clark Rockefeller, Richard Rosenthal, Mary Winkler and Joseph Druce. He used to lecture on occasion on forensic psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine.
During May, 2011 Ablow launched Dr. Keith Ablow Life Coaching, offering a team of life coaches trained by him who are experts at applying the content of his books "Living the Truth: Transform Your Life Through the Power of Insight and Honesty" and "The 7: Seven Wonders that Will Change Your Life."
In 2012, Dr. Ablow co-founded the New England Brain-Mind Institute, dedicated to bringing new scientific tools and technology to the treatment of psychiatric illness. He remains an ardent supporter of insight-oriented psychotherapy.
Dr. Ablow also performs (as a 'documentary' style television experience to educate the public to the power of psychiatry) what he terms "Street Therapy" wherein he approaches apparent strangers on the street with a camera crew and engages them in conversations about their personal problems on camera. According to his personal website, his goal is to "go deep" and to "discover what that individual is struggling with." There are a number of ethical concerns regarding this practice. However, Keith Ablow is no longer a member of the American Psychiatric Association, which is the governing body that sets the standards of practice for the field of psychiatry in the United States, and is therefore no longer bound to uphold those standards.
Proponents of "Street Therapy" point out that Dr. Ablow makes it plain that he is not providing psychiatric care. Participants sign disclaimers stating they expect no such "treatment" and understand that they are participating in a documentary-style television shoot. And some have described Dr. Ablow's interventions as startlingly perceptive.
