By the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the airport will have two brand new modern terminals and is expected to serve around 3 million people per year. from city's centre has been built to 2013 Summer Universiade and 2018 FIFA World Cup to change an airport into a hub for 3 milliones of passengers by year. The new developments are currently under construction.
A bus runs every hour from the bus terminal in Kazan to the airport. However this service is not available 24 hours a day.
The airport is still often referred to locally as the new airport, as from 1979 till end of 1980s there was also a second airport for local airlines, Kazan-2 Airport within the city. Instead of it, the main airport was situated in the same place within the city since 1930s till 1979.
