Kanembu People

The Kanembu are an ethnic group of Chad, generally considered the modern descendants of the Kanem-Borno Empire. The Kanembu number an estimated 655,000 people, located primarily in Chad's Lac Prefecture but also in Chari-Baguirmi and Kanem prefectures. They speak the Kanembu language, a variant of Kanuri, with many speaking Arabic as a second language. Linguistically and culturally, they are often considered a subset of the larger 4 million strong Kanuri, although their Kanembu traditions, dialect, and history are unique.

Famous quotes containing the word people:

A good cause can become bad if we fight for it with means that are indiscriminatingly murderous. A bad cause can become good if enough people fight for it in a spirit of comradeship and self-sacrifice. In the end it is how you fight, as much as why you fight, that makes your cause good or bad.
    Freeman Dyson (b. 1923)
