Kaisaniemi (Finnish) or Kajsaniemi (Swedish) is a station on the Helsinki Metro. It serves the central Helsinki district of Kaisaniemi. It is the only station whose name is announced in only one language: whether this is Finnish or Swedish is unknown and irrelevant, because the Finnish 'Kaisaniemi' and the Swedish 'Kajsaniemi' are pronounced identically. When the station was opened the announcement was for a while in two languages like on the other stations, 'Kaisaniemi - Kajsaniemi'. This unnecessary repetition caused a lot of amusement, and the station name has been announced only once since then.
The station was opened on 1 March 1995, designed by the architect bureau Kontio - Kilpi - Valjento Oy. It is located 0.6 kilometres from the Central Railway Station, and 0.9 kilometres from the Hakaniemi metro station.
The station is situated at a depth of 27 metres below ground level (22m below sea level). The station is equipped with an unusual glass-sided funicular-style elevator operating along the slope next to the escalators (contrasting with a more conventional vertical liftshaft).
Famous quotes containing the word station:
“With boys you always know where you stand. Right in the path of a hurricane. Its all there. The fruit flies hovering over their waste can, the hamster trying to escape to cleaner air, the bedrooms decorated in Early Bus Station Restroom.”
—Erma Bombeck (20th century)
