Orion Racing
Orion Racing India (O.R.I) is a team of enthusiastic engineers from K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai, India determined to get the most out of their educational experience. Through passion and commitment, students collaborate as a team to design, build, test and race an open-wheeled formula style race car that competes in the annual Formula SAE competition. Having developed four such cars (Barracuda600, Itanta, Stallion and ORI 10) the team is presently working on their fifth and their most advanced machine.
The Formula SAE competition is held by the Society of Automotive Engineers, and is the biggest engineering design competition in the world! It is a worldwide competition, with events held in the United States (2), UK, Australia, Germany, Japan, Brazil and Italy. The competition comprises seven events: Cost and Manufacturing Analysis, Presentation, Design, Acceleration, Skid Pad, Autocross, and Endurance.
In 2010, the team was ranked 3rd in the 'Cost Event'. In 2009, The team received the "best improvement" award when placing 69th out of 78 and became not only the best Indian team but the best Asian team.
The vehicle excels not only in its mechanical aspects but also in the electronic ones. The car is equipped with electronic components like Graphic L.C.D, Paddle shifting(semi-automatic gear shift) system, USB data logging and various sensors. An industrial standard protocol for sensor communication i.e. Controller Area Network (CAN) has also been implemented. Telemetry system has been added to aid driver to pit communication. Apart from this several other modules like brake bias, shift lights, etc. are also present on board. All the electronic systems are developed in house by the students themselves. Every year a new vehicle is designed from scratch, with each car being an improvement over the previous one. Most of the team members take building the car as their final year B.E project, hence fusing together academics and passion. Teamwork, leadership, problem solving skills as well as engineering and business skills are promoted throughout the entire process of designing and building the race car. The design process gives team members, as well as the sponsors an excellent opportunity to network with each other, resulting beneficial relationships for all involved.
