K28EU - News Operation

News Operation

KVVU currently produces a total of nearly 40 hours of local newscasts each week (seven hours on weekdays and one hour each on Saturdays and Sundays)more than any local station. The station also produces an additional ten hours of locally-produced entertainment/lifestyle programming (consisting of two hours each weekday) under the MORE brand.

In June 1998, the station debuted Fox 5 News at 10, the first 10 p.m. newscast in the Las Vegas market; it originated as a weeknight-only half-hour newscast, later expanding to weekends in June 2002, and then expanded to one hour in 2003. For the first couple of years, the newscast was solo-anchored by Angelica Urquijo. The station did not have a weather anchor or full-time sports anchor; the sports segments were pre-recorded with voice-over work done by boxing analyst Al Bernstein. The station added a morning newscast a year later in July 1999.

On September 12, 2006, the station launched an hour-long lifestyle magazine program called MORE; the program targets women aged 25–49, and features stories about Las Vegas fashion, local cuisine and events (the MORE program format originated at sister station, KPTV in Portland, Oregon and is also the name of a lifestyle magazine published by Meredith Corporation aimed at women in their 40s).

On September 10, 2007 KVVU-TV debuted an hour-long block of newscasts during the 5 p.m. hour, expanding the station's daily news production to six hours on weekdays; with the expansion, KVVU-TV became the only local station in Las Vegas carrying a newscast in the 5:30 p.m. slot. A year later on August 4, 2008, KVVU debuted a half-hour weeknight-only newscast at 11 p.m.

In September 2008, KVVU launched an additional hour of MORE at 4 p.m. weekday afternoons; one year later, the afternoon edition of the lifestyle program was rebranded as MORE Access and was moved two hours to 6 p.m., airing after the 5:30 p.m. newscast. On March 7, 2011, the weekday morning newscast (which consists of the pre-7 a.m. Fox 5 News This Morning and the 7-9 a.m. Fox 5 News: Live in Las Vegas) expanded to 4½ hours, with its start time moved to 4:30 a.m.

On July 9th, 2012, Fox 5 debuted a 6 p.m. newscast, moving the "More Access" show to 6:30 and cutting it to a half an hour. This move effectively made KVVU-TV the station with the most news programming in Southern Nevada, beating KTNV by 1 1/2 hours, 39 hours and 55 minutes, as compared to 38 hours and 25 minutes.

Famous quotes containing the words news and/or operation:

As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.
    Bible: Hebrew Proverbs, 25:25.

It requires a surgical operation to get a joke well into a Scotch understanding. The only idea of wit, or rather that inferior variety of the electric talent which prevails occasionally in the North, and which, under the name of “Wut,” is so infinitely distressing to people of good taste, is laughing immoderately at stated intervals.
    Sydney Smith (1771–1845)
