Juxtacrine Signalling - Types

Types

There are three ways of juxtacrine signaling:

  1. A ligand on the surface of a cell interacts with a receptor on an adjacent cell e.g.*Notch signalling.
  2. Ligand is in the extacellular matrix and is secreted by one cell to interact with anthor cell, the receptor in this case is integrin.
  3. A direct transmission of signals between adjacent cells that possess broad patches of closely apposed plasma membrane linked by transmembrane channels known as connexons. The gap between the cells can usually be between only 2 and 4 nm.

Famous quotes containing the word types:

The American man is a very simple and cheap mechanism. The American woman I find a complicated and expensive one. Contrasts of feminine types are possible. I am not absolutely sure that there is more than one American man.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)

He types his laboured column—weary drudge!
    Senile fudge and solemn:
    Spare, editor, to condemn
These dry leaves of his autumn.
    Robertson Davies (b. 1913)

The wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences. We must widen the range of topics and goals, the types of situations we offer and their degree of structure, the kinds and combinations of resources and materials, and the possible interactions with things, peers, and adults.
    Loris Malaguzzi (1920–1994)
