Junk Rig - Current Research

Current Research

Several lines of research are being pursued by members of the Yahoo! Junkrig Group which appears to be the most popular forum for discussion of the junk rig. The Junk Rig Association (see links, below) now has active fora, as well. Many people interested in junk rig research are members of both groups.

Some research of note:

The use of permanently cambered, flipping battens as pioneered by Nils Myklebust. This approach addresses one of the junk rig's greatest shortcomings: poor drive to windward in light winds. A similar approach involves the use of hinged battens to achieve a more precise camber than provided by bending of the battens alone.

The use of "cambered" panels to provide a more consistent camber as designed by Arne Kverneland and several others.

A "split rig" where the sail area of a single sail with one set of battens is split in two areas, before and after the mast. Developed by Slieve McGalliard.

The use of the Gurney flap is also being pursued.

Famous quotes containing the words current and/or research:

The English language may hold a more disagreeable combination of words than “The doctor will see you now.” I am willing to concede something to the phrase “Have you anything to say before the current is turned on?”
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)

After all, the ultimate goal of all research is not objectivity, but truth.
    Helene Deutsch (1884–1982)
