June Millington - Later Years

Later Years

After Fanny's break-up, June and Jean Millington formed another short-lived all-women rock group called the L.A. All-Stars. June then turned to studio work, producing records for Holly Near, Mary Watkins, Cris Williamson, Bitch and Animal, John Simon, Diane Lincoln, and Joel Zoss, among others. The Millingtons continued to record together after Fanny as well, most recently on the 2011 album Play Like a Girl on June's label Fabulous Records. June was once described by Guitar Player magazine as the hottest female guitarist in the music industry.

Since the 1970s June Millington has been highly regarded for her work on behalf of women musicians and the LGBT community. In 1986, she and her longtime partner Ann Hackler founded the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) in Goshen, Massachusettes. The non-profit institute's mission is to support women and girls in music and music-related businesses, with programs including a Rock 'n Roll Camp for Girls, and workshops on vocal and instrumental instruction, album production and recording techniques, lyric and music composition, and booking, promotion, and entertainment law.

Famous quotes containing the word years:

We are prisoners of the world’s demented sink.
The soft enchantments of our years of innocence
    Are harvested by accredited experience
Our fondest memories soon turn to poison
And only oblivion remains in season.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

Why it was that upon this beautiful feminine tissue, sensitive as gossamer, and practically blank as snow as yet, there should have been traced such a coarse pattern as it was doomed to receive; why so often the coarse appropriates the finer thus, the wrong man the woman, the wrong women the man, many years of analytical philosophy have failed to explain to our sense of order.
    Thomas Hardy (1840–1928)
