Jund Dimashq - Districts

Districts

Administratively, Jund Dimashq was divided into six districts: Ghutah, Hauran, Bathaniyya, Beqaa, Jaulan, and Hulah. Ghutah occupied the plain surrounding Damascus and was known as the "Garden Land", due to the numerous fields and gardens in its vicinity. Hauran's southern frontiers bordered Balqa and Amman and its capital was Bosra. Al-Bathaniyya had the same southern frontier as Hauran and was named after a small village called "al-Batanh" in its vicinity, from which Job is said to have been born. Its capital was Adra'ah (modern Daraa.) Beqaa was a mountainous district in the Anti-Lebanon Mountains and its capital was Baalbek, while principle villages included Zabadani, Kamid, and Arjamush. Jaulan in the west supplied Damascus with most of its provisions. The capital of the district was Banias. Hulah was a low-lying plain rich in rice and cotton, located between Jaulan and Tyre. Meiron was the capital of the district. Balqa was an outlying district, rich in wheat and Amman was its capital city.

Other principal towns and cities were Beirut, Sidon, Tyre, Tripoli and Jubail along the coast. The coastal cities each had their own, but small district. Jund Dimashq bordered Jund Hims to the north, Jund al-Urdunn to the west, and Jund Filastin to the south.

Famous quotes containing the word districts:

Cities need old buildings so badly it is probably impossible for vigorous streets and districts to grow without them.... for really new ideas of any kind—no matter how ultimately profitable or otherwise successful some of them might prove to be—there is no leeway for such chancy trial, error and experimentation in the high-overhead economy of new construction. Old ideas can sometimes use new buildings. New ideas must use old buildings.
    Jane Jacobs (b. 1916)
