Joseph F. Merrill - Later Life

Later Life

Merrill served as an apostle until his death in 1952 in Salt Lake City from coronary thrombosis. Upon his death, Joseph Fielding Smith offered the following tribute: “I marveled at his energy. Apparently he never got tired; he loved the truth. He loved the truth of science, but he loved more the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ ... He had a strong will, was pronounced in his opinions, but he was always submissive to the majority decisions of his brethren.” Merrill was buried at Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Famous quotes containing the word life:

It is a momentous fact that a man may be good, or he may be bad; his life may be true, or it may be false; it may be either a shame or a glory to him. The good man builds himself up; the bad man destroys himself.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

All my life I have lived and behaved very much like [the] sandpiper—just running down the edges of different countries and continents, “looking for something” ... having spent most of my life timorously seeking for subsistence along the coastlines of the world.
    Elizabeth Bishop (1911–1979)
