Cryan was born on September 1, 1961, in East Orange, the son of John Cryan, an immigrant to the United States from County Roscommon, Ireland, who would later be elected to the General Assembly and served as Sheriff of Essex County. His father had been charged in Federal court with racketeering and corruption, though the judge in the case dismissed the charges due to prosecutorial mistakes and ended the proceedings against him.
Other relatives involved in public life are his cousin, Morristown Councilman John Cryan, his sister, Union Township Municipal Clerk Eileen Birch, and his brother-in-law Superior Court judge Joseph Donohue.
Cryan graduated with a B.A. from Belmont Abbey College in Business Administration in 1983. Cryan was born in East Orange, and currently resides in Union Township.
Lobbyist Karen Golding pleaded guilty to stalking Cryan and other members of his family, including making 600 anonymous calls to his family members while she was in a pre-trial intervention program for an earlier series of harassing phone calls.

Famous quotes containing the word personal:
“... religion can only change when the emotions which fill it are changed; and the religion of personal fear remains nearly at the level of the savage.”
—George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)
“In our personal ambitions we are individualists. But in our seeking for economic and political progress as a nation, we all go upor else all go downas one people.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt (18821945)
“Wilson adventured for the whole of the human race. Not as a servant, but as a champion. So pure was this motive, so unflecked with anything that his worst enemies could find, except the mildest and most excusable, a personal vanity, practically the minimum to be human, that in a sense his adventure is that of humanity itself. In Wilson, the whole of mankind breaks camp, sets out from home and wrestles with the universe and its gods.”
—William Bolitho (18901930)
