Joseon Navy - Ships

Ships

Besides the turtle ship and the panokseon, the Joseon Navy used many other ships:

  • Hyeopseon (Hangul: 협선) was used primarily for reconnaissance.
  • Bigeodo (Hangul: 비거도) small and fast. It almost completely disappeared after the Imjin War.
  • Geomseon (Hangul: 검선) evolved from the Goryeo-era gwaseon (과선; 戈船). There were iron spikes on the roof like the turtle ship, but the geomseon was smaller, and usually had a complement of about 15 people.

They also used fishing boats for reconnaissance and sometimes in battle.

Famous quotes containing the word ships:

I saw three ships come sailing by,
Come sailing by, come sailing by,
I saw three ships come sailing by,
On Christmas Day in the morning.
—Unknown. As I Sat on a Sunny Bank. . .

Oxford Book of Light Verse, The. W. H. Auden, ed. (1938)

The ships we sank with women and children aboard. The lifeboats we shelled. Mmm ... we were good at that.
    Emeric Pressburger (1902–1988)

Oh, let me midlife mourn by the shrined
    And druid herons’ vows
The voyage to ruin I must run,
    Dawn ships clouted aground,
Yet, though I cry with tumbledown tongue,
    Count my blessings aloud....
    Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)
