Jorvan Vieira - Asian Cup Success

Asian Cup Success

Less than two months ahead of the 2007 AFC Asian Cup finals Viera was named coach of war-torn Iraq. Incredibly, he led Iraq to the 2007 Asian Cup title after stunning the pre-tournament favourites Australia in a 3-1 victory, edging Korea on penalties and finally upsetting regional heavyweights Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the final. The goal was scored by captain Younis Mahmoud. Vieira immediately confirmed he would not be staying on in the role, citing the unsettled nature of the Iraq football administration.

Famous quotes containing the words asian, cup and/or success:

Morals are in all countries the result of legislation and government; they are not African or Asian or European: they are good or bad.
    Denis Diderot (1713–1784)

    In poorer lands
No one touches the water of life.
    It has no taste
    And though it refreshes absolutely
It is a cup that must also pass
    Until everybody
    Gets some advantage....
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

The I’m-going-to-win-no-matter-how-I-have-to-do-it attitude just doesn’t seem to fit. For me, a contest isn’t a success unless it was fun, whether or not I win.
    Margo Godfrey Oberg (b. c. 1955)
