Personal Life

In May 2005, Rhys Meyers checked into a rehabilitation facility, Promises in Malibu, California, seeking treatment for alcohol abuse. On 24 April 2007, the Associated Press reported that Rhys Meyers returned to treatment. The actor's representative Meredith O'Sullivan confirmed the news to People magazine citing his need to take a break from his busy schedule in order to maintain sobriety.

On 20 November 2007, Rhys Meyers's mother, Geraldine "Geri" Meyers-O’Keeffe, died at Mercy University Hospital in Cork, Ireland following a short illness. Her funeral was attended by "hundreds of mourners" including film director Neil Jordan and actors Cillian Murphy and Colin Farrell.

On 27 February 2009, the actor checked into rehab a third time, seeking help for alcohol addiction; and checked out on 15 March 2009.

In May 2010, it was reported that Rhys Meyers was banned for life from flying on United Airlines due to "belligerent" and "disruptive" behaviour including reported use of a racial slur in an incident involving alcohol at John F. Kennedy airport.

In November 2011, Meyers was ordered by a French court to pay a restitution of €1,000 and was given a judgment of a suspended sentence for public intoxication 24 months earlier.

Famous quotes containing the words personal life, personal and/or life:

The dialectic between change and continuity is a painful but deeply instructive one, in personal life as in the life of a people. To “see the light” too often has meant rejecting the treasures found in darkness.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

The grief of the keen is no personal complaint for the death of one woman over eighty years, but seems to contain the whole passionate rage that lurks somewhere in every native of the island. In this cry of pain the inner consciousness of the people seems to lay itself bare for an instant, and to reveal the mood of beings who feel their isolation in the face of a universe that wars on them with winds and seas.
    —J.M. (John Millington)

There is no event greater in life than the appearance of new persons about our hearth, except it be the progress of the character which draws them.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
