Jonathan Edwards (musician) - Early Years

Early Years

Jonathan Edwards was born July 28, 1946 in Aitkin, Minnesota. At the age of six he moved with his family to Virginia where he grew up. At the age of eight he began singing in church and learning to play piano by ear. While attending military school, he began playing guitar and composing his own songs. As a teenager he began performing in front of audiences.

I started on a $29 guitar and immediately started putting a band together, writing songs and learning all the contemporary folk songs of the time. I just loved it, loved everything about it, loved being in front of people playing music.

While studying art at Ohio University, he became a fixture at local clubs, playing with a variety of rock, folk, and blues bands.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or years:

Long before I wrote stories, I listened for stories. Listening for them is something more acute than listening to them. I suppose it’s an early form of participation in what goes on. Listening children know stories are there. When their elders sit and begin, children are just waiting and hoping for one to come out, like a mouse from its hole.
    Eudora Welty (b. 1909)

The meaningful role of the father of the bride was played out long before the church music began. It stretched across those years of infancy and puberty, adolescence and young adulthood. That’s when she needs you at her side.
    Tom Brokaw (20th century)
