He is from the same ethnic group as former Presidents Siaka Stevens and Joseph Saidu Momoh. He joined the Sierra Leonean army in 1985, and went to Sandhurst Military Academy in England to train as an officer in 1988. He returned to Sierra Leone the next year and was promoted to Section Commander, and soon thereafter to Company Commander. He continued to move up the ladder, and in 1994 he went to the Teshi Military College in Ghana to train in the subjects of Army Command and General Staff.

Famous quotes containing the words youth and/or education:

My idea is always to reach my generation. The wise writer ... writes for the youth of his own generation, the critics of the next, and the schoolmasters of ever afterward.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

The proper aim of education is to promote significant learning. Significant learning entails development. Development means successively asking broader and deeper questions of the relationship between oneself and the world. This is as true for first graders as graduate students, for fledging artists as graying accountants.
    Laurent A. Daloz (20th century)
