Sweeney co-edited a study about the labor movement and has co-written two books about unions, including America Needs a Raise: Fighting for Economic Security and Social Justice. He is married to Maureen Power, a former schoolteacher. They live in Bethesda, Maryland. The Sweeneys have two children, John (an information technology professional) and Patricia (who works for the AFL-CIO).

Sweeney's hobbies include golf and bowling.
