John Rutsey

John Rutsey

John Howard Rutsey (May 14, 1953 – May 11, 2008) was a Canadian drummer, most recognized for being a co-founding member of Rush along with Alex Lifeson and Jeff Jones, and performing on the band's debut album. John Rutsey left the band in 1974, as he had musical differences with the band and suffered from type 1 diabetes throughout his life, and he was replaced by Neil Peart. His diabetes would later lead him to a death of a heart attack in 2008, 3 days shy of his 55th birthday.

Tape-recorded comments from Rutsey are heard in the 2010 documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, and the DVD release includes two performances with him on drums.

This is what the Church is said to want, not party men, but sensible, temperate, sober, well-judging persons, to guide it through the channel of no-meaning, between the Scylla and Charybdis of Aye and No.
