John Mantley - Childhood

Childhood

Reading was Mantley's childhood escape and his dream was to become an actor. While attending St. Catherine's Institute of Vocation School in Toronto, he persuaded a teacher to open a dramatic society, of which he became its first president. "And, therefore", he said, "I got to play the leads in all sorts of marvelous melodramas" in addition to performing as an athlete in high school. He was later president of the Victoria College Dramatic Society, which won international competitions.

Famous quotes containing the word childhood:

When you have really exhausted an experience you always reverence and love it. The two things that nearly all of us have thoroughly and really been through are childhood and youth. And though we would not have them back again on any account, we feel that they are both beautiful, because we have drunk them dry.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)

But no matter how they make you feel, you should always watch elders carefully. They were you and you will be them. You carry the seeds of your old age in you at this very moment, and they hear the echoes of their childhood each time they see you.
    Kent Nerburn (20th century)

Adolescence is a tough time for parent and child alike. It is a time between: between childhood and maturity, between parental protection and personal responsibility, between life stage- managed by grown-ups and life privately held.
    Anna Quindlen (20th century)
