On December 2, 2011 it was announced that Mabry would follow Matheny to his new job as St. Louis Cardinals manager, being named the assistant hitting coach for the Cardinals in 2012.
On November 5, 2012, Mabry was named the team's hitting coach following the departure of Mark McGwire to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
