John Kerin - Activities Since Leaving Parliament

Activities Since Leaving Parliament

After leaving politics in 1994, Kerin held senior positions with the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation and numerous other bodies. Kerin remains active across a range of activities in public policy in Australia. In October 2008 he was appointed to the board of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. In October 2010 he was appointed Chair of the Crawford Fund which aims to increase Australia's engagement in international agricultural research, development and education.

In 2011 he resigned from the NSW branch of the ALP in protest at what he saw as the increasingly highly-centralised nature of control over the operations of the organisation. He said that the administrative arm of the ALP in NSW had become increasingly involved in policy formulation leaving little room for meaningful participation by rank and file members of the ALP. In August 2012 he rejoined the ALP in Canberra where he felt that local management of the party was more responsive to the concerns of rank and file members.

Famous quotes containing the words activities, leaving and/or parliament:

The most remarkable aspect of the transition we are living through is not so much the passage from want to affluence as the passage from labor to leisure.... Leisure contains the future, it is the new horizon.... The prospect then is one of unremitting labor to bequeath to future generations a chance of founding a society of leisure that will overcome the demands and compulsions of productive labor so that time may be devoted to creative activities or simply to pleasure and happiness.
    Henri Lefebvre (b. 1901)

In leaving the people’s business in their hands, we can not be wrong.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

The war shook down the Tsardom, an unspeakable abomination, and made an end of the new German Empire and the old Apostolic Austrian one. It ... gave votes and seats in Parliament to women.... But if society can be reformed only by the accidental results of horrible catastrophes ... what hope is there for mankind in them? The war was a horror and everybody is the worse for it.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
