During the time of World War I, the 1918 flu pandemic and many of the nation's racial unrest such as the Red Summer of 1919, John Donaldson was present in many of these same cities during those dates, playing and pitching in some of the United States' most populous cities like Indianapolis, Brooklyn, Detroit, and Chicago. After being in the middle of all that turbulence, Donaldson made his way back to Kansas City, Missouri to play again for J.L. Wilkinson.
