John Doe (The X-Files) - Plot

Plot

John Doggett (Robert Patrick) awakens inside an abandoned warehouse only to discover a man in the process of stealing one of his shoes. Doggett chases the man outside, where the man summons two Mexican police officers. One of the policemen hits the man with their nightstick and the other demands either a visa or a passport from Doggett. When Doggett realizes he has no papers, the officer asks him what his name is. Doggett then realizes that he does not know his own name. Doggett is than transported to the local jail where he meets a fellow prisoner named Domingo. Domingo is eventually freed and asks Doggett if he wants to join him under the condition that Doggett will help him perform his criminal tasks. Doggett agrees and follows him. Once Doggett is freed, he refuses to perform Domingo’s task. Nestor, Domingo's friend, pulls out a gun, but Doggett quickly overpowers him and takes away the weapon. Doggett then returns to the abandoned warehouse in hopes of finding clues to his identity.

In the meantime, at the FBI, Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) examine video footage from a security camera positioned at the Mexican border. After discovering what is going on, Alvin Kersh disbands the taskforce hunting for Doggett, as he believes the video is proof that Doggett entered Mexico on his own free will and was not abducted. Back in Mexico, Doggett phones a United States Marine public affairs office hoping his Marine tattoo will shed some light on his true identity. Before he is able to ask any questions, he notices several Mexican policemen nearby and quickly escapes. Scully, meanwhile, receives word of Doggett’s call to the Marines. She then has the call traced and phones up Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish), telling her that Doggett is in Mexico. Reyes travels to the local town where Doggett was last seen. It is revealed that Caballero, the head of the local drug cartel, is a "memory vampire". He can absorb the memories of those posing a threat to his operation. Reyes eventually finds Doggett and, together with Skinner and the Mexican police, she is able to help him retrieve his memory back by forcing Doggett remember his son's murder. Doggett tearfully admits that he is happy to have all of his memories, even the bad ones, "as long as I remember the good.”

Famous quotes containing the word plot:

    Morality for the novelist is expressed not so much in the choice of subject matter as in the plot of the narrative, which is perhaps why in our morally bewildered time novelists have often been timid about plot.
    Jane Rule (b. 1931)

    After I discovered the real life of mothers bore little resemblance to the plot outlined in most of the books and articles I’d read, I started relying on the expert advice of other mothers—especially those with sons a few years older than mine. This great body of knowledge is essentially an oral history, because anyone engaged in motherhood on a daily basis has no time to write an advice book about it.
    Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)

    Ends in themselves, my letters plot no change;
    They carry nothing dutiable; they won’t
    Aspire, astound, establish or estrange.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)
