John A. Russo (politician) - Neighborhood Law Corps

Neighborhood Law Corps

In 2001, Russo founded the Neighborhood Law Corps, an organization to help address chronic urban problems. Law Corps attorneys, generally new law school graduates, focus on quality-of-life issues and tackle cases involving drug dealing and building-code violations. The Law Corps also led Oakland’s crackdown on liquor stores considered a blight on the community because they were providing a haven for drug dealing and other nuisances. In 2006, the National League of Cities named Oakland as one of nine winners of its 2006 award for municipal excellence, and one of three Gold award winners honoring the work of the Neighborhood Law Corps.

Famous quotes containing the words neighborhood, law and/or corps:

I grew up in a tough neighborhood and we used to say ‘you can get further with a kind word and a gun than just a kind word.’
David Mamet, U.S. screenwriter, and Brian DePalma. Al Capone (Robert DeNiro)

The so-called law of induction cannot possibly be a law of logic, since it is obviously a proposition with a sense.—Nor, therefore, can it be an a priori law.
    Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951)

The Washington press corps thinks that Julie Nixon Eisenhower is the only member of the Nixon Administration who has any credibility—and, as one journalist put it, this is not to say that anyone believes what she is saying but simply that people believe she believes what she is saying ... it is almost as if she is the only woman in America over the age of twenty who still thinks her father is exactly what she thought he was when she was six.
    Nora Ephron (b. 1941)
