Bastianich, who was overweight and suffering from several health issues, began running and eventually reduced his weight by 45 lb (20 kg). He has participated in several marathons and triathlons. In October 2011, Joe completed the Kona Ironman World Championships with a time of 12:31:39, placing 1427th.
