In 2008 Esch announced that he would again seek the Democratic nomination for a rematch with Lee Terry in Nebraska's 2nd congressional district. He again lost to Terry 52% to 48%. Esch stated afterwards that at least Barack Obama was victorious and that that was what mattered. Esch also said he was done running for the seat.
