History of Jigsaw
Elliot Aronson in 1971 was confronted with a problem. Student competition had become high and laws abolishing segregation had just passed. Students were having difficulty adjusting to the mixing of ethnicity in the classroom. Aronson had birthed an idea to create an atmosphere for increased collaboration and reduction of the resistance to work with one another. Aronson created assignments that made every member of the group equally important. The students had to pay attention and obtain much information from other group members. The diversity made it hard at first, but each students grade depended on their ability to work with others.
